When is the best time to take creatine?
For most people, any time you will take it consistently. Creatine works by saturating a muscle storage pool over weeks, so once you are saturated the time of day has no measurable effect on muscle creatine content (Kreider et al. 2017). If you train and want a default, take your daily 3-5 g in your post-workout meal, since one small study found a slight edge for post-workout dosing (Antonio & Ciccone 2013), and take it with food to aid uptake.

Should I take creatine before or after a workout?
After, if you are choosing between the two, but the difference is small. The single study on this (Antonio & Ciccone 2013, n=19) found post-workout dosing produced slightly better lean-mass and strength gains than pre-workout, though the sample was tiny and the effect modest. It is a weak preference, not a rule. Total daily intake and consistency matter far more than whether the dose lands before or after training.

When should I take creatine on rest days?
Whenever is convenient, ideally with a meal. On non-training days there is no workout to time around, and because the muscle creatine pool depletes slowly, the only goal is to not miss your daily 3-5 g. Anchor it to a daily habit like breakfast or dinner so you keep the pool topped up. Skipping the odd day will not undo your saturation, but daily consistency is what maintains it.

Does creatine work better with carbs or protein?
Uptake improves modestly when you take creatine with carbohydrate, or carbohydrate plus protein, because the insulin response helps drive creatine into muscle (Steenge et al. 2000). This matters most during a loading phase when you want to fill the pool quickly. Day to day, it is enough to take your creatine with a normal meal rather than on an empty stomach; you do not need a special high-sugar drink.

Do I need to load creatine, or can I just take 3-5 g daily?
Loading is optional. Taking 20 g/day (split into 4 doses) for 5-7 days saturates the muscle pool in under a week, while 3 g/day gets to the same plateau in about 3-4 weeks (Hultman et al. 1996). Loading only speeds the ramp and can cause mild bloating or GI upset. If you are not in a hurry, skip it and take 3-5 g/day every day; the end result is identical.

Does it matter what form of creatine I take?
Not for timing, and not much for anything else. Plain creatine monohydrate is the form used in almost all the research and the ISSN's recommended default (Kreider et al. 2017). Pricier forms like HCl, buffered, or liquid creatine do not beat monohydrate on effectiveness and follow the same daily-dose rules; they mostly add cost. Choose monohydrate, take it consistently with food, and compare products by $/g, which is what our creatine ranking does.
